How To Paint Ceramic Wall Or Floor Tiles

One of our readers Greg wrote: The ceramic tiles in our kitchen are too dark and we would like to make them lighter. How can I paint the wall tiles in my kitchen?

We frequently get questions from readers who don’t want to replace what they have but want to change the look of a tired worn out room.

In another article I wrote about painting appliances effectively, one of our most frequently read articles. Today’s paints have been greatly improved and most anything can take a new look with the right kind of paint. Painting ceramic tiles are no exception.

It is possible to paint kitchen ceramic wall tiles even if they are a dark color. It can be a great way to save money and to produce very original wall decor with hand-designed or hand-painted wall tiles.

Wash the wall tiles very carefully with cold water and pine sol or Mr. Clean. Rinse well with hot water.

Sand the surface to be painted with fine sandpaper to allow a better bond. Clean the surface again with a damp sponge. When everything is thoroughly clean, dry, and dust-free apply the primer with a small roller. It is important to do this job slowly and carefully not to leave lines in the primer.

The primer you choose is crucial in getting great results versus getting acceptable results. You should get a bonding primer, also referred to as a non-porous surface bonding primer. Do not skimp on the price here, one company that has a good quality primer is Sherwin Williams.

When the primer is dry, (don’t rush it), sand it lightly with a 220 sheet of sandpaper. While you can use latex paint for your topcoat, it is not recommended. An oil-based paint will give you a much more durable finish. Either a high gloss or semi-gloss finish is acceptable. Note it is better to apply several thin coats than one thick coat, as it builds up strength with each added layer.

You can also embark on any decoration you want. You can use stencils and paint designs, or if you are capable you can freehand your drawings.

If you don’t want to change the whole color of the tiles you can add decorations on them without the base coat by using ceramic tile paint. It is more expensive but well worth it for small areas.
